The hidden gem of Bangkok's bar scene - Cheap Charlie's

In the last couple of years, i've developed a liking for going to bars & drinking joints that are quirky, have a sense of uniqueness about them. Which is why i find the concept of speakeasies fascinating. I'm well on my way to completing my Speakeasy Trail in Singapore and have made it a point to find cool ones in cities I've been to.

In all my visits to Bangkok; I hadn't found one yet. Till yesterday; when i came across Cheap Charlie's.

It's bang in the middle of Bangkok; on Sukhumvit Soi 11. But part of it's myth is that inspite of being in the heart of the city; it's tough to find. 9 out of 10 times you'd walk past without even noticing it.

Find it and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

 It's a random little drinking joint that's been decorated with random shit that the owner found on his travels or got left behind by people. It has no roof; some tables put hastily together . There's a chain on the floor that demarcates what consistutes the drinking area of the bar. And it shuts at 11:45 pm; which is when the night life in Bangkok is just about warming up.

And yet; it's full to the brim. With interesting characters; people from different walks of life; ever willing to strike up a conversation.

And as an added bonus; it does live up to it's name -"cheap". The beers come for 70/80 baht and cocktails for a 100.

The next time you are in Bangkok, grab a drink here before you head out for dinner or drinks. You won't regret it.
